Just a quick post to highlight a great blog!
I was made aware thanks to my good pal Sarah Smizz.
We’re hatching a plan for city wide domination! Not really, but we are pulling together a great proposal for an exhibition that will *hopefully* be in Manchester. If not, probably Sheffield. We’re very excited!
But what the hell has this got to do with BLDGBLOG? Well, everyone is inspired by something. So, thanks BLDGBLOG – you’re an inspiration!
I’m a member of an independent studio/gallery space in Sheffield called Unit 3B (or on FACEBOOK).
The artspace is funded by members and fundraising events. We hold exhibitions from local, national and international artists and curators. We hold regular crit groups/film screenings/discussion sessions/gallery crawls. Anyone within an arts community will already know how important sessions such as these are for the surrounding communities.
Unit 3B has been expanding rapidly since it first started, and continues to grow. As it does, it requires more funding to enrich the culture and community that blossoms from it. The point of this post isn’t to brag about how great Unit 3B is, it’s to highlight the importance of funding in the arts. Small, independent galleries and studios come to depend on funding – not as a money making scheme, but to support, enhance and create platforms for local creative talent.
We have always known the importance of arts and culture in this country. Let’s not lose it now.

Enjoying the work of Jacob De Graf at the minute. I saw his work in issue 10 of ArtBox.
Particularly his older pieces – architectural paintings of small homes in mostly nocturnal landscapes. His more recent work is concentrated on form and composition rather than feelings/mood.
I love that De Graaf explores the idea of psychogeography of the home in a 2D format rather than 3D/installation.
The excellent Blog Gallery in Sheffield has commissioned me for their Billboards Project. A couple of artists each year have free reign over what is shown on the boards. I’m excited to be a part of this quirky and exciting project and send out my thanks to Bloc for the opportunity and appreciation of my work.
Bloc Billboard is situated on Eyre Lane outside the gallery and is used by artists as an experimental public exhibition space. The exhibition will be up until November, so if you get chance, pop down and have a look.
Can’t believe I’ve had my blog going for so long and not posted anything by Jenny Holzer. ‘Overdue’ is most definitely the word.
Whilst on the subject of words – I have a list of my favourites up at WORDNIK. ‘Overdue’ has just been added. You can follow them on Twitter too for daily words and the like. AND whilst now on the subject of Twitter, you can also follow HOLZER. Excellent!
New images I’m working on. They are from photographs of buildings I have taken in the past (reflections series).
I’ll be showing work at the next PRISM event.
PRISM is a bi-monthly contemporary art event. Established at The Showroom Cinema in 2008 it utilises various venues across Sheffield to exhibit work by emerging and established artists. This January it continues its residency at Bank St Arts – have a look at their SITE, they do good things!
